Director, Business Planning & Performance Reporting

Our client, the Nuclear Waste Management Organization (NWMO), is seeking a talented Director, Business Planning & Performance Reporting to join its highly accomplished team. This exceptional leadership opportunity, reporting to the CFO, manages business planning and performance reporting from start to finish for a large-scale, long-term project with a total life-cycle cost of over $23billion. The Director will join a growing team of scientists, engineers and other professionals to work collaboratively with Canadians in implementing the NWMO’s approach for the safe long term management of used nuclear fuel in a manner that safeguards people and respects the environment, now and in the future.

Key responsibilities include: supporting strategic planning with the Executive Leadership Team as part of the business planning process; delivering business planning and quarterly performance reporting presentations to the Board; business case analysis; providing ongoing performance reporting including overseeing cost management of program and project areas; ensuring governance over external funding programs; overseeing reporting to external stakeholders, including funding partners; and leading the budget process, working cross-functionally to conduct due diligence and consolidate the budgets from six key business functions − Engineering, Site Selection, Indigenous Relations, Risk Management/Strategic Initiatives, Stakeholder Relations and Human Resources. The role manages two direct reports and collaborates with the Controller, who oversees corporate accounting and reporting, and with the Director, Audit, who oversees internal audit and quality assurance.

Excellent relationship-building and communication skills are key requirements of the role in order to work effectively with decision-makers, with staff at all levels in business functions across the organization, and with external stakeholders, including funders.

REQUIREMENTS

  • University degree
  • 10+ years of progressive involvement in business planning and financial performance evaluation, including management experience
  • Experience in an industry setting involving project management e.g. engineering, construction, mining
  • CPA Accounting designation; CA, CPA preferred
  • Exceptional relationship-management skills, including organizational savvy, a collaborative approach, and an open communication style
  • Excellent report writing skills and experience in preparing Board presentations
  • Experience in presenting to senior management/Board
  • Ability to communicate financial concepts effectively to specialists and non-specialists
  • Good judgment and sound business acumen
  • Self-starter with a focus on continuous improvement and a keen eye for detail
